Lala Steyn

Lala Steyn has been deeply involved in social issues for most of her adult life, starting her career by teaching under-privileged learners and working to support the rights and needs of farm workers. She has a Masters in Business Administration with a strong strategic and business background and is currently responsible for Old Mutual’s R1.2 billion impact investment programme in the development of independent schools. The team has pioneered ways to provide investor returns while also empowering schools to provide affordable, quality education. As part of the collective leadership of the Surplus People Project in the 1980s, and later as senior manager in the then Department of Land Affairs, she was deeply involved in land re-distribution matters.
