Communicare invites the public to help name new Salt River Market development

What should one of Cape Town’s newest affordable housing precincts be called?

Communicare is inviting the people of Salt River to answer that question through an exciting Naming Competition for its transformative Salt River Market development.  The competition gives those living and working in the neighbourhood  the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by shaping the identity of the precinct.

The Salt River Market development will deliver quality, affordable rental housing and vibrant mixed-use spaces.  The competition forms part of Communicare’s commitment to involving the community in shaping the vision for how the precinct will be experienced in years to come.

“The identity of a place is created again and again, by the people who use and experience it,” says Anthea Houston, CEO at Communicare. “By inviting the public to name this development, we are creating an opportunity for the community to contribute to the story of a precinct that will serve generations of Cape Town residents.”

Located in the heart of Salt River, the development is a billion Rand investment in affordable housing, urban regeneration and placemaking. The chosen name will become a defining part of the precinct’s identity, appearing across its branding, communications and public spaces.

Entrants are encouraged to submit names that reflect the heritage, diversity, resilience and future aspirations of Salt River, together with a brief explanation of the inspiration behind their proposal.

The winning entrant will receive a R10,000 cash prize and the unique opportunity to have their chosen name become part of Cape Town’s urban landscape.

The competition is open to the Salt River community, with entries closing on 31 August 2026. *
