On Mandela Day, Monday 18 July, the Vulamathuba Empumelelo Community Learning Centre in Brooklyn was abuzz with staff and community partners as they rolled up their sleeves to give the centre a much-needed facelift.
The hands-on refurb was planned to not only recognise Madiba’s birthday, but align to the understanding of the day and make a practical contribution to change in the community.
The extended team came together to collaboratively work on creating an inviting space for the community to use. Members of the Ysterplaat Airforce Base, Communicare staff, Vulamathuba staff and learners as well as members of the Brooklyn community spent the day painting, cleaning and gardening, and committed to continued partnerships to benefit the centre and the community it serves.
Vulamathuba Empumelelo is the community and social development arm of Communicare. Programmes offered aim to empower their participants by advancing education, supporting job seekers and advancing both work and life skills. Such programmes are open to Communicare tenants and the broader community alike.
Noma-Afrika Nkwenkwe-Maxwele, Vulamathuba Empumelelo manager, said that the activities on Mandela day were a reflection of how it takes a village to build sustainable communities that thrive. Many hands made light work as smiles and banter were shared amongst both new and existing community members and partners. Noma-Afrika affirmed, “We truly felt the spirit of Madiba”.
